We had a very special visitor at the academy this afternoon: Sookie, the Portuguese water dog! Sookie is a specially trained canine who participates in the PAWS for Reading Program, which is associated with Support Dogs, Inc. of St. Louis. Sookie’s owner, Debbie, generously volunteers their time visiting Glenridge throughout the course of our summer academy so Sookie can encourage our growing readers. Sookie works one-on-one with students listening to them read, and has even been known to paw at a reader if he/she begins to falter. Debbie then follows up the reading with a discussion including comprehension questions which help support our readers. It is a highlight of the day for many of our students.
